Miratorg has received approval for a project to develop potato breeding

As part of the implementation of the FNTP Subprogram "Development of potato breeding and seed production in the Russian Federation for 2017-2030", the breeding center of the Miratorg agro-industrial holding, in partnership with colleagues from relevant state scientific institutions, initiated a large scientific work, the result of which will be the introduction of new canteens and industrial potato varieties. 

Miratorg Agroholding plans to invest about 1 billion rubles in the seed project. The production will be interregional and presupposes the availability of material and technical bases, primarily in the Kaliningrad and Bryansk regions.Miratorg breeders will produce the entire cycle of growing seed potatoes from a test tube to Elite and PC-1–stage classes, ready for sale for seeds.

In the Kaliningrad region, the project includes a modern energy-saving greenhouse complex, a center for microclonal plant reproduction, which includes a laboratory for phytosanitary control, which makes it possible to produce high-quality seed material free from infectious load.The presence of a greenhouse complex and land plots with a total area of 982 hectares allows you to create a full cycle of potato production of various categories. Miratorg has isolated field sites for replicating reproductions of potato seeds in different soil and climatic zones, including the Kaliningrad, Bryansk, Tula and Oryol regions. A specialized warehouse with a controlled microclimate and addressable container storage is equipped for storing the resulting crop.

"For our country, potatoes play an important role in providing food. Increasing potato production and improving its quality, reducing import dependence on varieties of foreign breeding is the most important task. Its solution is largely determined by the effectiveness of the organization of varietal seed production. The creation of new highly competitive potato varieties with specified economically valuable characteristics will make it possible to cover the internal needs of both the agricultural holding and the market as a whole, including the provision of Russian potatoes to the Tasty – and-Dot network.  In the future, a joint venture for potato processing in the Orel region will allow the production of potato patties, French fries, potato slices and flakes in accordance with the highest quality requirements," the Miratorg press service commented.
