Miratorg increased its cattle breeding stock to 160,000 head of herd over just nine months.
Bryansk, 10th October. Miratorg division in Bryansk announced that as part of the interregional “meat project”, its cattle breeding stock of special-breed 'Aberdeen Angus' cattle increased by 10% over the first nine months of 2016 – to 160,000 head of herd.
Miratorg built a vertically-integrated system of top-quality beef production in Russia from scratch – a system which now has a capacity of 130,000 tonnes of beef per year. The core of the success of this chain system is the breeding stock. It's the breeding stock which produces the livestock for fattening, slaughter and processing, as well as replacement heifers which increase the breeding stock, and replacement cows which fall by the wayside due to natural causes.
The complete production cycle “from cow to calf” is the key to the economic success of the project – generating healthy breeding stock, producing regular offspring. For this reason the company refuses to buy-in cattle from abroad. Over 2016 Miratorg plans to increase the number of calves on its farms to 145,000 – a 23% increase year-on-year.
Active work on livestock breeding at the cattle facilities has to be undertaken with the highest regard for veterinary and biological controls and standards. This careful work in the breeding process is the key to producing healthy animals, which in turn produces high-quality beef. Newborn calves are used to populate new farms in the Bryansk, Orlovsk, Kaluga, Smolenk, Tula and Kaliningrad Regions.
Sergey Kulikovsky, CEO of Miratorg division in Bryansk said: “Expanding the breeding stock is the basis of the whole project – whose final goal is a transition to a full cycle of cattle breeding. Today, our own breeding stock is more than 160,000 head, but by 2020 we aim to increase that to 330,000 head. In the short term we are able to collaborate with different farms and supply them not only with high-quality calves, but also show them how to use correct veterinary procedures, and ensure the purchase of animals for the right price. This approach will make the beef cattle industry a viable prospect for small and medium-sized business, along with the provision of state support.”
