Miratorg plans to increase a crop of Aberdeen Angus calves to 309,000 heads in 2022

Bryansk, February 22. Agribusiness Holding Miratorg, Russia’s largest beef producer, forecasts the calf crop in the amount of about 309,000 heads in 2022 at its farms in Bryansk, Oryol, Kaluga, Smolensk, Tula and Kaliningrad regions, which is 10% increase over 2021 and a new record.
Miratorg implements an inter-regional full-cycle beef cattle breeding project, from feed production to advanced meat processing, with a total cattle population of more than 820,000 heads of the specialized beef breed Aberdeen Angus. The project continues to develop in line with the business plan, with the prospect of increasing the herd to 1 million heads of cattle in the coming years at the expense of its own resources.
The maternal herd currently exceeding 380,000 heads allows for expanded reproduction of the herd, replacing animals leaving the herd for natural reasons and animals being sold with new ones in larger numbers and of better quality in terms of breediness and productivity, reducing the cost of production and increasing profitability of production.
To monitor the health and productivity of the maternal herd, our specialists carry out a range of veterinary and zootechnical activities, including ultrasound diagnostics, which make it possible to determine with high accuracy when an animal is pregnant, identify possible pathologies, prescribe the appropriate treatment and predict the time of mass calving.
During the calving period newborn calves will be monitored by veterinary specialists and livestock handling operators (“Russian cowboys”) who will provide birth assistance, access to water and timely move the animals to fresh pastures if necessary. After one month of age, calves in the summer pastures will be vaccinated according to the veterinary work plan.
In order to keep newborn calves healthy and to maximize their weight gain, animals are moved for grazing to pastures with grass of a specially selected botanical composition till the end of autumn. In order to have a good calf crop in the following year, 2023, breeding bulls will be introduced into maternal herds in the middle of the calving period. During the summer period animals are most active, and keeping them in pasture allows for a significant improvement in their exercise habits, which has a positive effect on calf production and health.
“In order to increase production of high-quality domestic beef and ensure its availability to the consumer, Miratorg solves complex tasks: introduces advanced technologies of animal breeding, housing and feeding, provides herds with pastures, including by putting abandoned land into circulation, increases the feed production, technical and human resource base of production. Our main focus is on breeding and genetic work and we will keep improving it,” the Miratorg’s press service commented.
